When wine lovers think of the Willamette Valley, Pinot Noir naturally comes to mind. Oregon’s cool climate, diverse soils, and talented winemakers have helped make the region one of the world’s premier destinations for this elegant varietal.
But Pinot Noir is only part of the story.
Visitors who seek out smaller, family-owned wineries can discover an entirely different side of Oregon wine country—one filled with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Barbera, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Zinfandel, and beautifully crafted red blends.
At Natalie’s Estate Winery, we love introducing guests to this broader world of wine. For those who enjoy exploring beyond the expected, the Willamette Valley can be a great starting point for discovering truly memorable bold red wines in Oregon.
The Hidden Side of Oregon Wine Country
One of the advantages of visiting a boutique winery in Oregon is the opportunity to experience wines you may not find at larger tasting rooms or retail stores.
Small, independent wineries have the flexibility to source exceptional fruit from vineyards beyond their estate, including warmer growing regions in Oregon and Washington. This allows winemakers to work with varietals that thrive in different climates while bringing their own winemaking philosophy to each bottle.
With an emphasis on small-lot production and quality over quantity, these wines reflect both the vineyard’s character and the winemaker’s vision.
We appreciate and support other small, family wineries. Two of our favorites that also produce bold red wines include:
Laurel Ridge Winery: Founded in 1986, Laurel Ridge is a family-owned winery in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA producing Willamette Valley classics alongside distinctive bold reds including Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and red blends. They were also among the region’s early producers of méthode champenoise sparkling wine, a tradition they continue today, all shared through a relaxed, personal tasting experience at their estate.
Lady Hill Winery is a family-owned winery founded in 2012 by fifth-generation custodians of this land. Located beside historic Champoeg State Park, its 150-acre estate weaves vineyards among organic gardens, heritage orchards, and pastures, creating wines with an authentic sense of place. Guests can explore Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Cabernet Franc, and distinctive red blends through a relaxed tasting experience at the St. Paul estate.

Cabernet Sauvignon: A Bold Surprise
Cabernet Sauvignon may not be the first wine you associate with a Willamette Valley wine tasting, but it can be one of the most exciting discoveries.
Fruit sourced from warmer vineyards can produce Cabernet Sauvignon with rich flavors of black cherry, cassis, blackberry, cedar, dark chocolate, and espresso. Structured tannins add depth and aging potential, while thoughtful winemaking helps maintain balance and elegance.
For food pairings, Cabernet Sauvignon pairs naturally with grilled steak, lamb, mushrooms, and aged cheeses.
Rediscovering Merlot
Merlot deserves another look. A beautifully crafted Oregon Merlot can be silky and approachable while still offering impressive complexity.
Plum and blackberry flavors are often complemented by notes of cocoa and spice, with softer tannins creating a smooth finish. Its versatility makes Merlot an excellent dinner wine and a wonderful choice for guests who enjoy full-bodied reds without overly firm tannins.

Sangiovese and Barbera: Italian Inspiration
Two of the most exciting wines to discover beyond Pinot Noir are Sangiovese and Barbera.
Sangiovese is known for vibrant acidity, bright cherry and raspberry flavors, dried herbs, and earthy spice. Its savory character makes it exceptionally food-friendly, especially with pasta, pizza, roasted meats, grilled vegetables, and charcuterie.
Barbera is another Italian varietal that deserves more attention. With bright acidity, generous berry flavors, and relatively soft tannins, Barbera feels fresh and lively in the glass. It pairs beautifully with everything from barbecue and salmon to tomato-based pasta dishes.

Petit Verdot: Powerful and Memorable
Traditionally used as a blending grape in Bordeaux, Petit Verdot can also create a distinctive stand-alone wine.
Expect deep flavors of blueberry and black currant alongside violet, baking spice, and a firm structure. For wine lovers searching for bold red wines in Oregon, Petit Verdot offers impressive concentration and excellent aging potential.
Why Small-Lot Winemaking Matters
Small-lot winemaking lets winemakers focus on every detail. Winemakers can select fruit for quality, harvest at optimal ripeness, ferment in small lots, and carefully match oak aging.
Rather than making wine to meet large production goals, boutique wineries can focus on balance, character, and craftsmanship. The result is often a collection of wines with distinctive personalities—and a tasting experience filled with unexpected discoveries.
