Harvest season in the Willamette Valley feels special. After months of watching the vines awaken, flower, set fruit, and move through veraison, everything comes down to a few important weeks. The vineyard is alive with activity, the cellar fills with the aromas of freshly harvested grapes, and another vintage begins to take shape.
At Natalie’s Estate Winery, harvest is one of our favorite times of year. It’s busy, demanding, and sometimes unpredictable—but for a winemaker, it’s also incredibly rewarding. This is when an entire growing season finally moves from the vineyard into the cellar.

Knowing When It’s Time to Pick
Harvest doesn’t begin simply because the calendar says September. Determining when to pick is one of the most important decisions we make all year.
As the grapes approach maturity, our winemaking team spends plenty of time in the vineyard. We monitor sugar levels and acidity, but numbers tell only part of the story. We also taste the fruit, evaluate the seeds and skins, and consider how the flavors are developing.
Weather matters, too. A stretch of warm days can accelerate ripening, while cooler temperatures can give the fruit additional time on the vine. Rain in the forecast can change plans quickly.
The goal is to harvest each vineyard and varietal when the fruit has the balance, flavor, and character we’re looking for.
Harvest Preparation – Pied de Cuve (Native yeast)
Before we harvest the vineyards, we prepare a “Pied de Cuve,” or “foot of the vat,” by picking and fermenting a small quantity of grapes. Once we harvest the remaining grapes, we add the Pied de Cuve to naturally speed fermentation. The process is similar to a “sourdough starter.” We use this “native yeast” preparation from only elements found in the vineyards, a true expression of the vineyard terroir.

From Vineyard to Cellar
Once we decide to pick, things move quickly.
Harvested grapes make their way to the winery, where our hands-on approach matters most. As a small, family-owned winery, we work with relatively small lots, allowing our winemaking team to give each wine close attention throughout the process.
Depending on the varietal and the wine we’re creating, the fruit may be sorted, destemmed, crushed, or handled in other ways before fermentation begins.
This is when the cellar truly comes alive. Fermentations need monitoring, decisions are made throughout the day, and another task is always waiting. Long days are part of harvest, but so is the excitement of tasting the earliest expression of a new vintage.
Every Vineyard Has a Story
One of the things we love most about harvest is seeing the differences between vineyards and grape varieties.
Natalie’s Estate may be located in the heart of Oregon wine country, but our wines reach beyond the Willamette Valley’s famous Pinot Noir. We enjoy working with grapes that allow us to craft expressive, flavorful red wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Barbera, Syrah, and other varieties.
Each vineyard brings something different to the cellar. Soil, elevation, climate, growing conditions, and the decisions made throughout the season all influence the fruit.
Our job as winemakers is not to erase those differences. It’s to help them shine.

When a New Vintage Begins
Harvest represents both an ending and a beginning.
It’s the culmination of months of vineyard work, but once the grapes reach the cellar, the next chapter begins. Some wines will spend months or years developing before they’re ready to share. During that time, we’ll continue tasting, evaluating, blending, and making careful decisions about each lot.
That patience is part of what makes wine so fascinating. The grapes arriving at the winery this harvest will eventually become bottles opened around dinner tables, poured during celebrations, and shared with friends—sometimes years from now.
